One of the things I love about the blog world is how it taught me the importance of bedtime snacks...
Of course I started out really scared at first: Yogurt. Yogurt and nuts. Yogurt and a measly sprinkling of granola.
You know, because whatever you eat after 8 goes straight to your thighs... (note sarcasm)
It was great, yes. But I was still waking up in the middle of the night with a grumbling tummy.
Then it was time to step up. I got bolder, and I added in more carbs and fat. Things were going well, I enjoyed my nightly noshing without any side effects... Until I started lifting heavier.
Then I had to call in this big guy...
Casein!
This thing is a-mazing! Of course not on its own or just a shake, because that could never keep me satiated... And lets face it, where's the fun in that?
But in whole wheat pancakes, topped with nut butter (and syrup of course)?
Or mixed with greek yogurt and other add-ins (banana bread, muffins, granola, fruit, cereal etc), topped with nut butter?
P.e.r.f.e.c.t.
Not only is it delicious (Dymatize cookies and cream!) and not only have I been sleeping soundly, but I've also been recovering quicker. I don't feel as sore the next day after an intense workout and I always get back in the gym feeling stronger!
And speaking of the gym...

I'd be waking up hungry again, and sometimes even before I got to sleeping.

Feels good to know that I've come a long way from over a year ago! It's the little things :)
Have a great week ahead guys!

I'm with you about bedtime snacks- i need them otherwise I will almost always wake up during the night starving! How is the ingredient list of Dymatize? Cookies 'n' cream sounds yummy!
ReplyDeleteIt's naturally as well as artificially flavoured, but not too shabby and a pretty short ingredient list!
Delete"100% Micellar Casein, Milk Protein Concentrate, Cookie Bits, Cocoa, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Soybean Oil†, Sucralose, Lecithin, Potassium Chloride, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Cellulose Gum"
Absolutely agree on casein as a night time snack - it's crazy what weight lifting does to your appetite! My favourite way to eat it is mixed with Greek yogurt and topped with nut butter - so good.
ReplyDeleteI still have yet to try casein but I keep seeing it everywhere!
ReplyDeleteBedtime snacking for the win! Especially if almond butter and chocolate are involved. Though, yes, I'm still having the (soy) yogurt ...
ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of you being asked for weight lifting advice! What did the guy(s) want to know?
Don't worry girl, the fears go away in time. Most of them did, didn't they? Soon it'll all be good, without any side effects other than a sense of relief and happiness.
DeleteI had a guy asking for advice on how to work his calves hahaha! It's a small thing but it feels nice because over a year ago I would never even have dared to look into the weights room!
I think I would die without after dinner snacks. No sarcasm.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'd be able to live without an after dinner snack. Joshua never has a snack after bed and I'm always wondering how he does it. craziness I tell ya! Ha Ha
ReplyDeleteI use casein as recovery and nighttime snack, too. It fills me up so nicely without making me sick and stuffed before I go to bed.
